Can We Have A Beautiful Wedding for Under £1000 - Hannah

With a budget of £2000 Hannah and her husband-to-be had to fine tune all their wedding planning arrangements to ensure they had the perfect day. The honeymoon was £1000 leaving just £1000 for the wedding ceremony and reception. How did they manage it?

They agreed together this was THEIR wedding and they'd do it THEIR way, and while they took some good advice they made sure to ignore the advice and opinions (sometimes negative) of others who would have had a more elaborate, costly wedding ceremony and reception. Not wanting to start married life in debt they remained true to themselves and their goals.

They made savings as follows:

  • Wedding dress sourced via Facebook for £70.

Hannah says "I couldn’t believe it. I tried it on and it fit like a glove. It was my dream dress too!"

  • Bride Shoes - Purple Converse (non-branded) from Amazon for £8.
  • Flower girl dresses £0  (They paid for their own at a cost of £8 each from eBay).
  • Walking Bride Down the Isle Sisters Outfit £0 (sister paid for her own)
  • Bridal and Bridesmaid Bouquets x 5 eBay £30
  • Grooms Party Buttonholes x 7 Hobbycraft £20
  • Cufflinks Debenhams Sale £5 each
  • Grooms, Best man and Page boys suits - Debenhams (bought items as 3 separates rather than as one-piece suits) totalled £90 each.
  • Shoes - Shoezone £11 each.
  • Wedding Invitations - FreePrints app which offers 45 FREE prints a month and you only pay delivery. This was £2.99 and they arrived in under a week. Invitations were designed using Picturecollage app.
  • Wedding Cake - Cupcakes were made to order, 100 for £60 and a Mr and Mrs Caterpillar cake £15 (self decorated).
  • Wedding Car - Free - Family members car
  • Photographer - FREE - Family member who gave services as a wedding gift
  • Ceremony - held on a week day - £300
  • Reception - local Bar £0 - Guests paid for own meals and drinks .

In the wedding invitation envelope Hannah put a details card which read:

“We love that we can share with you our very special day but there is something cheeky that we feel we need to say, would you be so kind if after we seal the deal you would be able to pay for your own reception meal” . Hannah's own words

Note: They invited 80guests and 50 declined ...possibly due to wedding being a weekday, meals paid for by guest. Being able to keep everyone happy by inviting them and not having them attend for their own reasons can be an added bonus when needing to cut costs! There is always a silver lining.

Final words from Hannah:

"We stayed true to ourselves and it paid off. Everyone who came said it was the best wedding they had ever been too and they loved it. And most importantly we loved it. We had a 4 night honeymoon in Amsterdam which came to £1000 and that was the biggest spend in our budget. So all in all it came under £2000"

Amazing value, low budget wedding and a happy day had by all!

Thank you Hannah for sharing these great low budget wedding tips with us.

Real Life - My Low Budget Wedding ( Less than £5000) and how I did it

I noted a bride-to-be generously sharing her low budget wedding planning costs along with her tips for making savings on a Wedding Planning Group and she kindly gave me permission to publish the details here for the benefit of other frugal brides.

Hannah Marie writes

"My h2b (husband-to-be) asked on my birthday (boxing day) 2018 so we've had 5 months to plan and pay for what we needed in that time.

It's been madness!! Haha.

Here are some money saving tips that I think will be really helpful to those who are on a budget.

Invitations

If you download a free app called freeprints, you get 40 free prints a month. I also use a free app called Pic Collage in which I uploaded a pic of me and h2b, the wedding information and picked the colours of the invite as the ones of the wedding theme. We made 80 personalised invites and only spent £2.99 for the shipping on the freeprints app.

Cake

caterpillar cupcakesWe are having 2 caterpillar cakes. Each serve 20 and they are £6 each from Asda / Morrisons . We are having cupcakes made and for 40 it is £60. So £72 for cake and cupcakes for 40 people.

Bridesmaids dresses

Brand new on eBay they cost £4 each for the flower girl ones and £25 each for the older bridesmaids. A total of £58 for 4 dresses.

Bridal shoes

ShoeZone have some white lacy type shoes for £6 each, really pretty. £24 total for the 4 bridesmaids and mine are white converse £25 from JD Williams.

Suits. Matalan we spent £80 for the grooms 5 piece suit and £60 for the page boy 5 piece suit. £140 for the 2.

Flowers

 artificial wedding flowers budget
We have artificial. Definitely post on your local Facebook groups too. I made 6 bouquets using flowers from Hobbycraft and watching a YouTube tutorial. All 6 bouquets cost £18 to make.

Ceremony

Registry office which is on beautiful grounds. £314 for the ceremony, wedding certificate box and a picture of me and h2b signing the register. Definitely phone around and ask for prices. Some places wanted to charge us £600+!

Reception

We're having a sit down meal instead of a party type thing. So no DJ, buffet, decorations etc. Massive saving. We asked all guests what they wanted to eat and they have offered to pay for their own meals. They knew of our struggles. Don't feel cheeky if the guests offer to pay for their own. Let them! Food is one of the biggest costs of a wedding.

Gifts

All guests are receiving a little mesh bag filled with sugared almonds. 60 bags on eBay for £1. Enough almonds to fill £5. Bridal and grooms party are having £30 each on gifts. Big expense but we've saved so much everywhere else. Total costs of gifts £174.

Photography

We're lucky enough to have my brother in law do our pictures for free but if you don't have that then I highly recommend disposable cameras. One camera for every 4 people and 2 per reception table. The guests can take pictures throughout the day and night. If you have a hashtag the ones who use their phones can upload them for you.

Summary of costs

  • Ceremony £314
  • Evening is a meal in a family pub. £60.
  • Each guest (40 in total) has offered to pay for their own meal.
  • Wedding Dress £70
  • Groom's suit £130
  • Best Man suit £130 (he wants to pay for his own)
  • Page boy suit £80
  • Flower girl dresses £4 each x2 (brand new on eBay!!!)
  • Bridesmaids dresses £30 each x2 (paying for their own)
  • Mother of the bride suit £40 (paid for her own)
  • Bouquets £30
  • Full bridal party shoes £100 (of which we are only paying £40 of)
  • Wedding gifts £160
  • Little extras £70
  • Wedding cars free from family members
  • Photographer free from brother-in-law
  • Honeymoon including spends £1500

That's a total of £3292 (without things not being free would come to £5000) of which were only paying £2492.

 Custom wedding poems
Hannah Bishop writes custom poems for events including weddings to add a special something to your invitations, save the dates, rsvp's! Whatever the occasion.

Here is one of Hannah's low budget wedding themed poems.

Wedding planning is so exciting.
Yet scary at the same time.
One minute your feeling anxious.
The next, things are seeming just fine.

The biggest stress is the budget.
The smaller it is the bigger the task.
Will we be able to afford this?
Is a question you'll certainly ask.

You start to look at your menu.
To see what cutbacks you could make.
With your head hung low you question.
Should I sod it and just home bake?

It doesn't stop there with the questions.
Is an expensive DJ a must?
When your Bluetooth speakers are sat there
Quietly gathering dust.

It doesn't make it easier.
Seeing other brides spend with pleasure.
Taking it all within their stride
Because a budget for them is a leisure.

You feel incompetent that you can't do
All the luxury things they can.
Arriving to the church in their limousine
When your questioning a car or a van.

It's also the suits for the men
Oh goodness, then there's the dress.
Then the worst question of all comes.
Is this all really worth the stress?

You can see where this is going.
You've cried so many tears.
You never thought what it would be like.
To plan what you've wanted for years.

But this is the time you need to stop
And think of why your here
And remember the love you will bring
The happiness and the cheer

Imagine your families and friends
When they all take their places
And seeing you in your attire
With big smiles on their faces.

It isn't about what we don't have.
Or the simple things we bring
It's about him making you his queen
And you making him your king.

It's saying your vows to one another
Making promises you will keep.
So sod how tight your budget is
You can still love on the cheap.

Shotgun wedding before I took my husbands kidney

I secretly married my partner on the 24th June 2016. We were a perfect match!

My husband and I were in the process of him donating a kidney to me (I have PKD Polycystic Kidney Disease). Paul had to undergo all sorts of different tests, to determine if he was healthy enough to go through it all. Thankfully everything went well, we were almost a perfect match and we were going to have our operations in July.

I went to see the surgeon, but he said I needed to lose weight, at least two and a half stone. Even though we were disappointed the operation had been put back to November, we still went ahead with the wedding.

"Till death do us part"

My husband had this crazy idea that he was going to die during the operation, so he wanted us to make everything legal for the sake of our children. That monies would be safe and my mother in law Leanne wouldn't try to come in and take any money away from me and our children. The strange thing was, he almost did die due to being pumped full of Penicillin when he is allergic to it!

We need a shotgun ...

With everything that we were going through and my ill health through kidney failure, we didn't want this to become a huge stressful affair, as we were already stressed up to the eyeballs as it was. So we decided that we should only tell our children, parents and siblings what was happening. I knew that if I told one friend the news would spread like wildfire and I couldn't cope with all the potential stress that could come with it. Friends and family might be upset some had been invited and others not so we decided that if would be far simpler if we didn't invite anyone (beyond immediate family) that way, no one could be offended.

The mother-in-law wasn't invited but she came anyway!

Wedding Photo Collage Gifts
My mum came round the night before the 'shotgun' wedding and did my nails for me and I went to my friend's house at 7am on the day and she curled my hair for me, it looked stunning. We were married in a registry office and it was the first time I had seen my mother-in-law in 18 months, as we'd had a huge row about her saying "you're all like wolves, after my money!'' Leanne as I said earlier was a major reason for getting married, as she eat sleeps and breathes money and would throw us all under the bus for a chance at instant cash.

I wore a black and white dress which is a huge change for me, as I've lived in trousers/leggings for the past 20+years. Paul and our son wore suits and our daughter had a pretty little dress for the occasion and she was so excited about it all. Janine had desperately wanted us to marry for years and to have the same surname as us. I never changed my surname though, as I wanted to keep mine, my surname belongs to me, it's all I've ever known and I belong to no one.

The ceremony was very simple and quick, which suited us, we are not the type of people who like pomp and ceremony. Just having family there was more than enough.

All's well that ends well

We took photos outside on mobiles, so the quality wasn't that great, but I still love them. After that we all went for a meal at a restaurant and came home afterwards. After the busy day and stress of it all, I came home to sleep, as my body and mind were shattered. Almost two years have passed and believe it or not, I'm still talking to my mother in law!

If I was getting married again, I'd have a black and white wedding theme and maybe I might renew my vows one day and do it all 'proper'.

And for all those brave fellow PKD warriors out there!

My English Beach Wedding and a pick-up truck!

Low budget wedding with a beach, bbq and a pickup truck ..not fancy but a lot of fun!

With our unpredictable weather in the UK a beach wedding can be risky business, but with some beautiful beaches matched with unrivalled lush cliff tops (we have something to thank our rain for) it's not as crazy as it seems.

Myself, I didn't go all the way with a beach wedding, in that the ceremony was held in the local registry office which was situated in a rather beautiful town hall, listed building with amazingly well kept gardens. I married back in the day when having a wedding officiant barefoot on a beach wasn't doable, at least not that I was aware of at that time. So we did the 'deed' in the registry office.

My small wedding party of about 35 guests then made our way via cars and a rusty blue pickup truck (me and my dress fitted easily into the back of it) travelled to the beach!

The weather was far from perfect with clouds and light drizzle, but our unorthodox drive and happy demeanour saw us joyously planted on the sandy/pebbled beach surrounded by lovely rock faces perfect for photos and generally having a bit of random beach fun.

We enjoyed the nature, the views, the sea breeze before working up an appetite and heading back to my mums thatched cottage garden for a BBQ and drinks.

My wedding guests, I'm sure had never been to a wedding like it, but in terms of making the most of a small wedding budget and still having a memorable day, we nailed it.

We saved money on travel (luckily we lived near the beach) transport (yay for pick-up trucks) and reception venue. With enough talented DIY photographers in the group, we had plenty of authentic natural photos to fill our wedding album.

Tropical Vintage Beach Heart Invitation SuiteThis was over twenty five years ago and while the marriage didn't last the memories of that day and my lovely guests and their gung-ho, go-along-with-it attitude has lasted.

If you're looking to save money on a wedding and yet want something memorable, don't be afraid to ditch the traditional idea of what a wedding day should entail (limos and champagne) and enjoy a fun day out at the beach, a park, a forest (depending upon where you live) and enjoy the natural beauty which is so abundant in the UK.

If you've had an out of the box wedding in the UK, drop me a line here and we will publish your story.
